Introduction

Empress Nadinia calls upon you once more, Arisen. In the “A Candle in the Storm” quest from Dragon’s Dogma 2, you must uncover the mastermind behind a recent assassination attempt. Be cautious, though—if you make the wrong move, the culprit may slip away. This walkthrough for Dragon’s Dogma 2’s “A Candle in the Storm” quest will guide you to achieve the best outcome.

How to Start A Candle in the Storm

“A Candle in the Storm” begins at the Volcanic Island Camp, where Menella assigns the quest. To get there, complete the main quest “The Guardian Gigantus” or follow the path from southwest of Bakbattahl. First, finish the prerequisite quest “Shadowed Prayers.” If you caught the assassin, you can start “A Candle in the Storm” immediately. If you received the “bad” ending, visit the Battahl Morgue, revive Empress Nadinia with a wakestone, and deliver her letter to Menella to begin the quest.

Tip: Place a portcrystal in Bakbattahl and carry a ferrystone. It’s also useful to leave another portcrystal at the Volcanic Island Camp to save time traveling.Once at the camp, find Menella next to the Volcanic Island Armory and speak with her to start the quest.

Talk with the Gaoled Brigand in “A Candle in the Storm” quest

Menella asks you to gather information on the mastermind behind the assassination attempt. If you’ve already spoken to the assassin in Battahl Gaol, this task is complete. If not, return to Bakbattahl and take the northeastern path to reach the Gaol. There, you’ll find the assassin, Herman, on the left side. He won’t share any information without a bribe of 5,000 gold, but once you pay him, he reveals that he was working for the Coral Snakes. Return to Menella in the Volcanic Island Camp and share your findings to receive a ferrystone as a reward.

Leak Information to the Coral Snakes

Menella instructs you to leak information to the Coral Snakes. Visit Battahl Gaol again and find Ashe, located in the third cell on the left after entering the cell blocks. Inform him that the empress is in your custody, and he will arrange a meeting at Pilgrims’ Path.

Report Back to Menella in “A Candle in the Storm” quest

Follow Menella to the marked area northwest of Bakbattahl. Head north along the main road until you reach a wooden bridge. Descend into the gorge, then continue west toward another wooden bridge. Look for a door in the rock wall on your right and enter to find Menella and Empress Nadinia inside.

Unmask the Mastermind

Head to the Pilgrims’ Path Empty Abode and meet Menella at the quest marker. She will explain her plan, and you’ll need to decide whether to support or oppose Empress Nadinia’s proposal. This choice will impact the outcome of the “A Candle in the Storm” quest, so consider it carefully!

  • If you support Empress Nadinia’s proposal, the mastermind behind the assassination plot will arrive, confirm that the captive is indeed Nadinia, and demand that you kill her. Stand next to Nadinia and draw your weapon (you cannot harm her). The mastermind will then reveal her identity and motive before Menella arrives to arrest her. This leads to the “best” ending, earning you a reward of 25,000 gold and a Ring of Amplification.
  • If you oppose Empress Nadinia’s proposal, the mastermind will notice the deception and escape before you can unmask her. She will summon a large group of Coral Snakes that you must defeat to complete the quest. The reward in this case is 19,000 gold and three pieces of Jasper.

Other possible outcomes include grabbing or attacking the mastermind before she reaches the Empress or after she orders you to kill her. In this scenario, she will be arrested but commit suicide before questioning, resulting in only 19,000 gold. If you support Nadinia but attempt to leave when the mastermind asks you to kill her, she will escape and summon the Coral Snakes. You’ll receive 19,000 gold and three pieces of Jasper for defeating them, but the assassination plot will remain unresolved.

Completing these final steps will finish the “A Candle in the Storm” quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
