Introduction

In Dragon’s Dogma 2, Captain Brant tasks you with freeing Magistrate Waldahr, who is imprisoned in Vernworth gaol for refusing to alter the Code of Vermund for Disa. Brant gives you the gaol key, but you’ll need to convince Waldahr to leave. This guide walks you through “The Caged Magistrate” quest, including how to find and free him.

Where to locate The Caged Magistrate Waldahr

Enter the palace grounds and head to Vernworth Castle Gaol Tower. Otto greets you and grants access. Go downstairs, explore a few rooms for loot, then focus on the main area—a long corridor with pillars and eight cells on each side.

Magistrate Waldahr is in the first cell on the right. Wait for the guards to turn away, then use Captain Brant’s Gaol Key to unlock the cell. Enter, talk to Waldahr, and urge him to escape. He’ll explain he’s content with the Code and old texts but might reconsider if you find him “a place with a mountain of tomes.” Leave the gaol and return to Captain Brant.

How to locate ‘a place with a mountain of tomes’ in ‘The Caged Magistrate’ quest

Brant advises you to speak with Kendrick, a balding man in a blue robe found near The Gracious Hand in the slums. Pay Kendrick a gold donation, and he’ll reveal that a local boy named Malcolm is missing. This starts the “Heel of History” quest, where you search for Malcolm by talking to the slum children. Locate Aimee, who reveals Malcolm went into the vaults beneath the slums. Return to Kendrick, and together, enter the vaults to find the boy. While exploring, you’ll discover Malcolm and a large underground library. Kendrick makes Malcolm promise to keep the library a secret.

Return to Waldahr

Return to Waldahr, inform him about the library, and escort him from his cell to the slums. Then, go back to Captain Brant to claim your reward: 7,000 gold and a ferrystone.

You’ve finished “The Caged Magistrate quest” and can start the next one “The Arisen’s Shadow“.
